Roller Skating Association International Encourages Roller Skating as Safe and Healthy Fitness Activity for Youth and Adults for Heart Health Month in February
ArticleType: Press Release
(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Every year, millions of children are injured while participating in sports and fitness activities. Many of these injuries could be prevented with careful selection of appropriate fitness activities and the use of safety resources available in many sporting activities. Combined with the fact that nearly 2,200 people die from cardiovascular diseases every day, finding an aerobic activity that is heart-healthy and safe is important for people of all ages.
During the month of February, rinks around the country will be celebrating Heart Health Month and reminding the public that one of the safest sports and recreation activities is roller skating. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has found roller skating twice as safe as the local playground and three times safer than basketball or football – both sports that are championed throughout the country.
Many activities that youth participate in for fitness, such as bike riding, jogging and skateboarding, have outside risk factors including uneven sidewalks, heavy traffic and inclement weather. These unpredictable factors sometimes cause more of a threat of injury than the activity itself. Indoor roller skating eliminates the worry of all of these unpredictable factors.
